- Top-down angle. Shoot from directly above the plate. It gives the model the cleanest view of every item and the truest sense of portion area.
- Even lighting. Daylight is best. Avoid heavy shadows and warm yellow restaurant bulbs that can mute the colour of vegetables and proteins.
- Plate contrast. A white or light-coloured plate makes segmentation easier. A patterned plate or a dark wood table is harder for the model to separate from the food.
- One clear shot. If a sauce is poured over everything, scan before mixing. If items are stacked, separate them slightly so the model sees each one.
